West Sayville, NY
While traveling from New York to Holland, Michigan, a group of Dutch people discovered that oyster farming was excellent on this southern coast of Long Island. In the small village of West-Sayville, a thriving oyster industry grew from their hands. The best oysters in the world, which found their way all over the globe. "The Hage family and the De Waal family came from Texel and Zeeland. They saw here that they could do what they were good at back home," says Jim McNamara. He and village historian ("every village in the state of New York is required to employ a historian!") George Munkenbeck show us around. They are also involved with the West-Sayville volunteer fire department, which was founded by the Dutch around 1900.
The fire department also competes against other fire teams throughout the state, and the West-Sayville team consistently finishes high. "Always first or second place," the gentlemen boast. But even better: the fire department's stunt team is called "Flying Dutchmen" and has a golden clog with wings in its logo.
Strathmore, AB
The small village of Strathmore, where the Dutch settle in Canada, is located not far from the large city of Calgary. There, too, the Dutch are always happy to buy authentic Dutch products. Even though some have been in the new country for generations and were born there, they still remember the licorice, the stroopwafels, and the chocolate sprinkles from their grandparents. And now they come to get these typically Dutch groceries themselves, for example at the Dutch Store in Calgary.
